GOVERNMENT HOUSE.

HONGKONG. 29th. July, 1918.

į

I have the honour to report with much regret the death of Sergeant A. 48, Thomas Glendinning of the Hongkong Police.

Sergeant Glendinning was in charge of the Police Station at Tai 0, which is situated at the west end of

Lantao Island in the Southern District of the New Territories.

It appears that on the morning of July 17th. about 10.30 a.m. while Sergeant Glendinning was working at his desk in the charge room of the Police Station, a Indian Constable, Teja Singh, B. 18, entered and deliberately shot him in the head with his service carbine, death being

almost instantaneous. The Indian constable then fired at the

Sergeant's wife and at a Chinese boatman attached to the

Station narrowly missing both, and then set fire to the Police

Station, retired to his own quarters, and finally shot him-

-self. On the report of the first shot the Indian constable

on sentry guard with his carbine, together with 2 Indian

Sergeants, 8 Indian constables and 2 Chinese employees ran

away.

Considerable damage was done to the Police

Station before Mrs. Glendiming and her child were rescued

some four hours later by No. 2 Police Launch which fortunately

came

THE RIGHT HONOURABLE

WALTER LONG, M.P., &c.
